Planning ahead is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones. A Will and Power of Attorney (POA) allow you to clearly set out your wishes and appoint trusted individuals to act on your behalf when needed.

Many people are surprised to learn that in Ontario, Wills and Powers of Attorney can be signed and witnessed through an online notarization process, making it easier and more convenient to complete these important documents without attending an office in person. Below is an overview of how our online notarization process works.

Step 1: Book an Online Notarization Appointment

Start by booking an online notarization appointment at a time that works for you. Once your appointment is confirmed, you will receive instructions for your video meeting and what you need to prepare in advance.

Step 2: Print Your Documents

Before your appointment, you must print your Will or Power of Attorney documents.

During the video call, you will be required to:

  • Sign using pen and paper (wet signature)

  • Initial every required page

  • Sign the documents while being observed live on video

Ontario law requires the signing to be properly witnessed, which is why documents must be physically printed and signed during the appointment.

Step 3: Sign During the Video Call

At your scheduled appointment:

  • Your identity will be verified as part of the notarization process

  • You will sign your Will or POA on camera

  • The Notary and a second witness will watch you sign in real time

  • The Notary and second witness will sign their counterpart copies

This ensures the signing meets Ontario’s legal witnessing requirements.

Step 4: Send Your Signed Documents to Us

After the video appointment, you will send your signed documents to our office.

Once received:

  • The documents will be fully executed and completed

Step 5: Receive Your Executed Documents

After execution is complete, your finalized Will and/or Power of Attorney can be:

  • Picked up, or

  • Couriered directly to you for convenience

You will then have properly signed and witnessed legal documents ready for safekeeping.
