WHAT DOES APOSTILLE MEAN?

apostille in Canada

An apostille serves as a formal endorsement of a document's legality, validating its acceptance for use in another country. When a document issued in one country needs to be utilized elsewhere, it must undergo a process of legalization. Typically, this involves either a full legalization, a two-step procedure, or a simplified legalization, referred to as apostille.

Effective January 11, 2024, Canada has implemented a streamlined document legalization process known as the apostille.

Previously, Canadian documents destined for international use required a cumbersome two-step authentication process involving verification by Global Affairs Canada followed by legalization at the consulate. This process was both time-consuming and costly. With the introduction of the apostille procedure, Canada now offers a single-step solution.

Once an apostille is affixed to your document, it becomes immediately valid for use in another country, provided that country is a signatory to the Hague Convention. This eliminates the need for further consulate visits, significantly reducing both the time and expenses associated with legalization.

However, for countries not yet party to the Hague Convention, such as the UAE, Cuba, and Jordan, obtaining an apostille doesn't bypass the consular legalization process.

For a comprehensive list of the 126 countries that recognize apostilles under the Hague Convention, please refer to the official website linked here.

Each embassy or consulate has their own rules and regulations concerning the authentication and legalization process, and it is important to note that there are some exceptions to this standard process.
