If you’ve obtained an RCMP Criminal Background Check and need to use it outside Canada, you’ll likely be asked to have it apostilled. At DG Notary, we assist clients across Toronto and Ontario with professional notary and apostille services, ensuring your documents are properly authenticated for international use.

What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is a form of international authentication that confirms a Canadian document is genuine and can be legally recognized in another country that is part of The Hague Apostille Convention. Since January 11, 2024, Canada’s participation in the convention has simplified the process—no more multiple authentication steps.

Apostilling an RCMP Criminal Background Check

When you need to apostille your RCMP background check, you have two main options: provincial or federal apostille. The best route depends on how your document was issued and how quickly you need it processed.

1. Provincial Apostille (Ontario Apostille)

If your document needs to be processed quickly, a provincial apostille through Ontario’s Official Document Services (ODS) is often the fastest choice.

Key Details:

  • Processing Time: Typically a few business days

  • Requirement: The RCMP check must be notarized by a Toronto notary public before apostilling

  • Advantages: Faster turnaround and ideal for most international applications

  • Example: If your RCMP criminal record check is notarized at DG Notary, we can submit it for a provincial apostille in Ontario for quick authentication.

2. Federal Apostille (Global Affairs Canada)

If your RCMP background check was issued directly by the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa, it can be sent to Global Affairs Canada (GAC) for a federal apostille.

Key Details:

  • Processing Time: May take several weeks

  • Requirement: No notarization required if issued directly from the RCMP

  • Advantages: Ideal for clients who prefer federal-level authentication or if the receiving country specifically requests it
